Twenty-Eight

Esperance. 1944

The mail when it came, came all at once. Some envelopes so old, so worn-looking, Elise was afraid they may no longer hold a letter inside.

It felt like a small miracle, an answered prayer, as Amelie handed her the letters, as though they were sacred. Mail had been rare during the Occupation, and nothing had been received from America.

‘Merci,’ Elise whispers through her shock, her excitement. Amelie smiles, their hands both fastened on the pale blue envelopes. Her mane of red curly hair has thinned and a few grey streaks have appeared. Everyone has aged so much, but her smile of simple pleasure at the return of the post makes her look like the woman who handed Elise that first letter from William, all those years ago.

Placing the letters in her bag, Elise races to the street, past the bakery, the shops, into the house, up the stairs. Closing her bedroom door behind her she tries to catch her breath.

One by one, Elise lays the envelopes out gently on her bed. Her heart is racing. All the time she has sat in this very spot, reading letters years old, for the hundredth time. Now, seven new ones.

Elise looks at the familiar writing, the ink faded but the hand that held the pen strong. She pictures that hand. Can feel its touch.
